****Updated Head Coverings Document (PDF)****

There has been a lot of controversy about whether a woman's head should be covered while she is prophesying or praying.  We have men among the children of Israel who cover their heads because the priests of old wore head coverings. Let's investigate what is proper for Sisters and Brothers in the body of Christ to do regarding head coverings.

Exodus: 39:27-28

And they made coats of fine linen of woven work for Aaron, and for his sons, 28. And a mitre of fine linen, and goodly bonnets of fine linen, and linen breeches of fine twined linen.

The High Priest wore a MITRE (Diadem, head dress). But since Jesus came in the flesh and died for our sins, the men of Israel are not to do this anymore. Jesus ended the Levitical Priesthood at his crucifixion.  We are now under the order of Melchizedek. Jesus is Melchizedek, the Priest of the Most High God.

Genesis 14:18

And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

Psalm 110:4

The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 5:1-10

For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: 2. Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. 3. And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. 4. And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. 5. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. 6. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. 7. Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; 8. Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; 9. And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; 10. Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews 6:20

Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

In the Holy scriptures what does our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ require us to do?

Let us define the following words:

Love: Adore, Be devoted to, and/or Worship.

Obedience: Submission, Compliance, Agreement and Respect.

As parents we teach our children to love and obey us.  They do this by respecting the rules we set for the family.  Therefore, Jesus has set before us rules for his family.  If we love Jesus then surely we want to do that which he requires.  The scriptures below will support the requirement requested by our Lord Jesus Christ who is the God, the ONLY God Israel has ever known, who is the God of the Old and New Testaments.

The Holy Bible, God's WORD!

 Deuteronomy 11:1, 22

Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway. 22. For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cleave unto him;

Deuteronomy 6:4-5

Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord: 5. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

St. John 14:15

15. If ye love me, keep my commandments.

The following verses will provide an explanation why women are to cover their heads before prayer and prophesying.

1 Corinthians 11:1-15

Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. 2. Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. 3. But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. 4. Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. 5. But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered
dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. 6. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. 7. For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. 8. For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. 9. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. 10. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. 11. Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. 12. For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God. 13. Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? 14. Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? 15. But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

Some women will say that their hair is their covering, but if your hair is the covering referred to in the above verses then that would mean that all men should be bald, since they are not to cover their heads.  Let us reason together, our grandmothers, and great grandmothers wore head coverings to church.  It was a custom among our people.  In this last generation we have gotten away from that.  Please read the following and understand that when we cover our heads we are showing God that we know our place in the creation and that we are obedient to his word and understand his protocol.

Numbers 5:18

And the priest shall set the woman before the Lord, and uncover the woman's head, and put the offering of memorial in her hands, which is the jealousy offering: and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the curse:

I Samuel 15:22

And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

In addendum

Above is a thirty minute lesson given by Pastor Buie about the Head Covering of Women. Please watch it for more information. If any still have issues with women covering their heads, please understand that every organization has rules of conduct as well as a dress code, and at the Israel of God, one of our rules is for women to cover their heads because we believe it is proper for them to do so. Men are not to cover their heads, therefore they can't attend worship services wearing hats.

Being a humble servant is a righteous thing and nothing to be looked down upon.

Peace in Jesus' name!
